The 2025 Murphy Homes Maroochy Classic, held on January 24th and 25th at Maroochydore Beach, showcased the pinnacle of surf lifesaving talent. As one of the premier events on the surf sports calendar, the Classic attracted elite athletes competing across various disciplines, including beach flags, sprints, relays, and water events.
This year's competition was particularly notable for the reintroduction of the Open Belt Race, a historic event making its return to the program. Thanks to sponsorship from Australian Swim Tours and Murphy Homes, both the men's and women's belt races featured a winner-takes-all prize of $1,000. These straight finals, limited to eight participants each, were held immediately before the Open Iron finals, adding to the day's excitement.
The event boasted a prize pool nearing $70,000 in cash and prizes, underscoring its significance in the surf sports community. Athletes from various clubs showcased their prowess, with events like the beach sprints and relays highlighting both individual talent and team coordination. The water events further tested competitors' skills and endurance, making for thrilling spectacles.

Maroochy Classic: A Day of Heat, Hustle, and Heroics

The Maroochy Classic was an unforgettable experience, blending athleticism, community spirit, and the beauty of the Sunshine Coast. It was a blisteringly hot day, the kind where the sand burns underfoot, but the incredible athletes walking around made it worth every bead of sweat.
Set against the striking backdrop of Maroochydore’s cityscape, with the surf club perched like a guardian of the beach, the event was alive with action. Right in front of the surf club, beach sprints and relays commanded attention, while further out on the waves, ironwoman competitors put their strength and stamina to the test. It was the kind of scene you’d expect to see in a sports documentary—athletes pushing their limits in one of the most picturesque locations imaginable.
In between shooting, I managed to grab a coffee and a classic sausage sizzle from the local volunteers—a perfect pairing for a day like this. As I focused on capturing every moment, there were plenty of highlights: falls in the sprints as runners tumbled into the sand mid-stride, and the sheer drama of the beach flags event. The athletes diving headfirst for the flag batons, their bodies soaring and crashing into the sand, resembled gladiators in the heat of battle.
This day, we had the privilege of shooting with the latest top-end professional cameras, just released to the market. Capturing at a staggering 1/40,000th of a second, every grain of sand kicked up by these incredible athletes was preserved in crystal-clear detail. The result? Over 2,000 breathtaking photos and some stunning videos that immortalize the energy, intensity, and heart of the event.
